The Curry Mile is an official nickname for the part of Wilmslow Road running through the centre of Rusholme in South Manchester. The reason for it having this nickname is that there are a large number of restuarants, take-aways and kebab houses specialising in the cuisines of South Asia and the Middle East, it is thought to be the largest concentration of South Asian restaurants outside the Indian subcontinent. Within the leangth of half a mile there are at least seventy plus establishments like this, which has granted its name the 'Curry Mile'. After numerous indian restaurants and take-aways came to the area, it has been followed by lots of different types of shops which follow the same Asian culture including clothing, grocery supermarkets and book shops. From the 1980's to early 21st century, the area was dominated by mainly Pakistani cuisine and this remains dominant to this day. However, there has been a noticeable increase in Afghan and Arab cuisine since 2000 in the area. The Curry Mile has turned into a hub for Asian culture within Manchester, which is one of the reasons I've decided to photograph it for my project on Cultural Diversity.The area is very busy throughout the day and into the night, and gets visited by many students everyday due to its close proximity to Fallowfield which is the most popular area to live in for students which study at the Manchester Universities, and the Curry Mile is in between Fallowfield and the Universities.
